КОНЦЕПЦИЯ

The terrain of the site played into our hands – the house with its entrance court sits at the top, and from there terracing cascades down, built of large gabbro slabs alternating with wooden decking, toward the pavilion and the woodland part, toward the borrowed landscape.

The fire pit area deserves special mention. The meeting of an illuminated water surface, a gas fireplace and soft furniture creates a snug corner for relaxation.

GREENING

We aimed for monochrome plantings: perennials, massed plantings of mountain pines and rhododendrons, and Amur maples with architectural crowns. Along the perimeter the site is enclosed by a massed planting of evergreens, screening the garden from the neighbors and the main road.

A rise runs along the southern side of the site. To emphasize it, we built a retaining wall around the perimeter of the lawn, further separating the plantings and the lawn itself by level. The main paths are laid with sawn slabs of heat-treated gabbro, a typically Karelian stone. Ground covers are planted along the edges of the slabs to dissolve them into the landscape.
